Women's soccer tops McMurry, 2-1 in ASC opener

ABILENE- Sul Ross women's soccer opened American Southwest Conference play Thursday with a 2-1 victory over McMurry University in Abilene.

The Lady Lobos posted their first goal in the first half at the 33rd minute.

Sophomore midfielder Britney Berumen converted, unassisted,  from the top right hand of the box for a 1-0 Sul Ross lead.

McMurry's Julia Renfro then tied the contest at the 41:06 mark off a double assist by Kaitlyn Roberts and Abril Aguayo.

At the 67:17 mark of the second half, junior midfielder Aylin Villalobos put the Lady Lobos ahead on a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead and the eventual Sul Ross victory.

Sully notched six shots putting five on goal while the War Hawks finished with a 15-shot tally with five shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Taylor Higgins recorded four saves on the afternoon.

The Lady Lobos are now 4-0 in their series with McMurry in a series dating back to 2015 which marked the first season of women's soccer at Sul Ross.

With Thursday's win, Sully improves to 2-1 on the season including a 1-0 mark in ASC play. The War Hawks drop to 2-3 and 0-1.

The Lady Lobos will continue their Abilene road swing with a 5:00 p.m. bout against defending ASC Champion Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday.
