PHOENIX, Az.- The Sul Ross State University Lobos fell to the Arizona Christian Firestorm by a 42-20 count in the season opener for both teams Saturday night in Phoenix.
Arizona Christian took the initiative with just under 11:00 minutes left in the first quarter as Alec Hathcock trotted one yard into the end zone following a six-play, 60 yard drive downfield.
Parker Brubaker's extra point kick was good at the 10:55 mark.
The Firestorm scored again on their next possession with a five-yard toss from Adam Abbatacola to Alias Sturges before Brubaker's extra point gave the home team a 14-0 with 5:03 remaining in the opening period.
The Lobos lit the board in the second quarter as
Julio Azua converted a 28-yard field goal at 11:21.
Abbatacola found Sturges again, three minutes later on a four-yard strike capping six plays and 78 yards. Brubaker's kick was good for a 21-3 Arizona Christian lead at the 8:27 mark.
Sul Ross cut its deficit to 11 at 5:28 with a 40-yard pass from
Fabian Baeza to
Marcus Montez. Azua added the point-after kick as Sully trailed 21-10.
Abbatacola closed out the half on the ensuing possession with a 75-yard scoring launch to Kendrick Murphy. Brubaker's kick was good giving the Firestorm a healthy 28-10 lead that led to intermission.
Azua started the third quarter with a 30-yard field goal to pull the visitors to within 15 at 7:43
Arizona Christian then put up 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 42-13 advantage to the closing period.
The Lobos scored the final touchdown of the game with 33 seconds left as Baeza converted a two-yard run following a nine-play, 60-yard drive.
Azua's kick cleared the uprights but the Firestorm went on to claim the 42-20 victory.
The Firestorm dominated with 600 yards of total offense while holding Sul Ross to 267.
Williton Grear led the Lobo running game netting 65 yards off of 14 carries. Baeza completed 17 of 36 passes for 191 and a score.
Senior linebacker
Jacques Wisner posted seven tackles including a sack and a breakup.
Azua was perfect on point after kicks at 2-2 and was also 2-2 in field goals.
Up next for the Lobos is the home opener against defending ASC champion University of Mary Hardin-Baylor September 15.
