Football topples Division II UTPB, 47-22

Box Score 5327 | Lobos Game Week

ODESSA- Sul Ross bent, then broke U.T. Permian Basin in a season-opening 47-22 victory over the Falcons Saturday night at Ratliff Stadium.

After U.T.P.B. nearly erased an 18-point deficit, the Sul Ross defense repelled a two-point, game-tying conversion attempt late in the third quarter.

Less than two minutes later, Sarkeithian Thomas' 38-yard fumble return restored a nine-point edge.

Jeremey Schilhab's two-yard run as the quarter ended, built a 31-16 advantage. The Falcons closed within 31-22 with 13:34 left on a 71-yard pass from Kameron Mathis to Courtney McMaryion but again the Lobo defense took command starting with a block extra point attempt.

Two more Sul Ross interceptions led to game-clenching scores. James Davis rushed four yards for a 37-22 lead with 10:09 left. Twenty-two seconds later, Byron Jones made a leaping catch of a 31-yard pass from Davis in the right corner of the end zone. Eli Lopez's conversion increased the score to 44-22 with 9:47 to play.

Lopez concluded the scoring with a 34-yard field goal with 1:22 to play.

Sully held a slim edge in total offense, 427-414 but intercepted four passes, forced three fumbles, recovering one, and converted a safety.

The Lobos built an early 18-0 lead starting with Lopez's 23-yard field goal less then three minutes into the game.

Davis then passed 19 yards to Jeremy Reed with Lopez adding the extra point. A bad snap on a U.T.P.B. punting situation resulted in a safety and Sul Ross capitalized 86 seconds later on Jones' 36-yard scoring reception from Davis with 5:28 left in the second quarter.

The Falcons closed within 18-10 at the half, scoring with 3:10 left on Michael Myers' four-yard toss to Kyle McBride and Bailey Giffen's 25-yard field goal at the gun.

Myers' two-yard pass to Mitchel Lenard brought U.T.P.B. within 18-16 with 5:38 left in the third period before Sully regained decisive momentum.

The Lobos take on No. 1 and defending National Champion Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6:00 p.m. next Saturday in Belton.
