PLAINVIEW-Andre Wilson (Kingsville/H.M. King) rushed 14 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns as Sul Ross delivered a 48-27 bruising to host Wayland Baptist University Saturday in non-conference football action.
Wilson's second of two touchdowns came with just under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter sealing the win for the Lobos who improved to 1-1 on the season. Sul Ross will take on another NAIA opponent next Saturday in a 6:00 p.m. home opener against Arizona Christian University. Next Saturday's game marks the first contest on Jackson Field's new artificial surface.
The Lobos jumped out to a 20-0 lead.
Sul Ross opened the scoring as James Davis (Houston/South) connected with Byron Jones (League/Clear Springs) on a 40-yard strike with 10:54 left in the first quarter. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
The lead swelled to 13-0 as Ennis Harmon (Beaumont/Ozen) blocked a punt which he returned 30 yards into the Pioneer end zone. Adam Cruz (Canutillo/CHS) booted the extra point with 14:14 remaining in the second quarter.
Wilson then scored the first of his two touchdowns on a six-yard trot capping seven plays and 93 yards at the 8:25 mark, second period. Cruz then added the extra point for a 20-0 margin.
Wayland answered with a three-yard scamper by Preston Woodward and Daniel Martinez's extra point at 3:12.
The Lobos then rebuilt a three-touchdown lead when Jones recovered a fumbled snap on a Pioneer punt attempt in the end zone. Cruz nailed the extra point for a 27-7 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the half.
Mike Parsley's 39-yard touchdown pass to Trey Rowe with 24 seconds left pulled Wayland within 27-13. Martinez booted the extra point to cap the first half scoring.
Jacob Castaneda's (El Paso/Franklin) interception set up the Lobos' first score of the second half.
Davis then capped a four-play, 32 yard drive with a nine yard run. Cruz's extra point extended the lead to 34-14 with 8:22 left in the third period.
Wayland's De'Sean Johnson responded with a 23 yard run with 4:44 left in the third. Martinez's kick was blocked leaving the score at 34-20, Sul Ross.
Davis countered with a seven yard pass to Steven Savedra (El Paso/Del Valle), with Cruz adding the extra point. The 11-play, 80 yard drive consumed 6:25.
The Pioneers scored their final touchdown with 9:16 left in the game on a one yard run by Parsley. Martinez added the extra point for a 41-27 score.
After an exchange of turnovers, the latter a Sul Ross fumble recovery, Wilson put the game out of reach with a 27-yard burst at 1:53. Cruz's kick was good capping the Lobos' 48-27 victory.
Davis carried 12 times for 39 yards and a score. He completed 16 passes of 27 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Davis was intercepted twice.
Jones snared five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Savedra added three receptions for 36 yards and a score.
Mike Quinonez (El Paso/El Dorado) led the defense with seven tackles. Zack Roberson (Houston/Cypress Ridge) had five stops including a sack for a loss of 3.5 yards.
Sul Ross bagged 394 yards of total offense while the Pioneers finished with 404.
