Late third quarter rally lifts McM past SRSU women, 86-71

ABILENE-Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) led with 17 points as the Sul Ross Lady Lobos dropped an 86-71 decision to McMurry Saturday in Abilene.

Sul Ross held the lead at halftime but could not sustain the momentum through the third period.

Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) dished out 14 points in the effort while Killeen Shoemakers grads Ashley Ousley and Jonette Jackson each scored 11.

The Lady Lobos hit nearly half of their field goals at 25 of 51 or 49 percent including a six of 18 showing beyond the arc.

Sul Ross converted the first bucket of the contest as Minjarez connected from long range at the 8:14 first quarter mark.

Sully then used a 5-0 run to lead by six, 10-4 with a scoop shot by Jackson at 5:20.

A layup by Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California) gave the Lady Lobos and eight point, 14-6 advantage at 3:47.

The War Hawks closed the period with a free throw by Sham Hunter with Sul Ross leading 18-13 heading to the second quarter.

Sul Ross erupted in the second period with an 11-0 run that ended with a Miles layup at 7:48 and would go on to lead by as much as 15 as Ousley banked on a pair of foul shots at 6:13.

McMurry climbed to within seven at 40 seconds as Taylor Russell's layup cut the War Hawk deficit to a 40-33 margin.

Two free throws by Miles gave Sully a 42-33 favor going to intermission.

McMurry went to work in the third and slowly cut their deficit down to one at 4:08 with Sul Ross ahead, 51-50.

A three-pointer by Russell on an ensuing possession gave the War Hawks the go ahead as McMurry finished the period with a 63-57 advantage.

The War Hawks broke away in the fourth mounting a 16-point lead off a 12-0 run.

The game ended on a 5-0 McMurry run as the War Hawks wrapped up the 86-71 win.

The Lady Lobos drop to 4-18 on the season while McMurry improves to 5-16.

Sul Ross will return to the Gallego Center this Thursday and Saturday for league games against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia.
