Lobos Gameweek
ALPINE, Texas- In the final home game of the season the Sul Ross Lobos (5-4, 3-2 ASC) cruised by Howard Payne University (0-9, 0-6 ASC), 42-8 at a cool and windy Jackson Field Saturday night.
The Lobos will wrap up the season with a 1:00 p.m. conference kickoff at East Texas Baptist on November 12.
Following a first quarter that witnessed a lackluster offensive output by either squad Sully pegged the first points on the board with 7:25 left in the second period as
James Davis (Houston/South) scampered five yards. The converted extra point kick by
Adam Cruz (Canutillo/CHS) capped an eight-play, 78-yard drive.
Sul Ross turned to its special teams as
Wesley Moss (San Antonio/Brennan) hauled the mail on a 78-yard punt return at 5:10. Cruz added the extra point for a 14-0 Lobo advantage.
With 11:06 remaining in the third quarter
Jeremy Reed scored on a 15-yard pass from Davis following seven plays and 66 yards. Cruz then booted the extra point.
The Yellow Jackets saw their first and only trip to the end zone with 11:06 left in the third period as Caisson Montieth connected with Eric Haverstock from 17 yards out. Howard Payne converted a two-point pass play and trailed 21-8.
The Lobos spread the gap at 8:24 as Davis found
Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) on a 47-yard strike before Cruz's extra point.
Davis then hit
Steven Savedra (El Paso/Del Valle) on a six-yard pass at the 9:40 post, fourth quarter. Cruz nailed the extra point for a 35-8 Sul Ross lead.
Sedrick Brown then caught a 39-yard scoring pass from
Jeremy Schilhab (Uhland/Lehman) at 2:34. Cruz supplied the extra point for a 42-8 Sul Ross lead and the eventual victory.
For the game the Lobos outpaced the Jackets in total offensive yards by a 424-232 margin.
Davis completed 27 of 36 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Savedra grabbed seven catches for 105 yards and a score.
Zack Roberson (Houston/Cypress Ridge) led the defense with eight tackles including a pair of sacks for a loss of 16 yards.
Quinton Jackson (Austin/Reagan) and
Jacob Castaneda (El Paso/Franklin) posted interceptions for returns of 30 and 24 yards respectively.
